25/10/2016 - The Visual Process of Rex

One of our earlier blogs elaborated on the visual process of Nairi, and now it is time for us to do the same for Rex!
As you’ll see, Rex has changed quite a bit over time. He actually started out a mysterious Sherlock Holmes inspired detective!

At first, Shirin was a bit more on the ‘modern’ side of things, so we wanted Rex to have this blend of ‘danger’ and ‘wit’ to him. This is why we felt that a mysterious detective was, at the time, the right way to go. We were also thinking of a more villainous personality for Rex and had we gone down that road he would have had a different role in the game.

Once the artist started experimenting with Rex’s range of expressions, we felt it’d be more interesting to have Nairi and Rex be a ragtag team with different perspectives and emotional responses to the situations they’d run into in Shirin. We drifted away from the idea of having Rex be a simple, mysterious bad guy, and he evolved into a different type of character.

These are some early sketches for the character. You can even see a rounder version of Rex on the right! We didn’t want Rex to be too cute, so the one on the left didn’t really work out.

These were one of the first colored concept images for ‘modern-look Rex.’ At this point, Rex didn’t even have his favorite cloak.

Eventually, we went for a less modern look for the city of Shirin, so Rex evolved as well. The above sketch was a quick reinvention of ‘Sherlock Rex.’ His raincoat became a cloak, and his watch became a little bag!

After Rex got his cool new cloak, his hat gradually changed to a turban-style piece. Also, Rex’ silly little bag on his chest changed into a more comfortable shoulder bag.

In the end, we are very pleased with how Rex turned out. We feel he’s got more surprises up his sleeve than ‘Sherlock Rex’ could have, and his criminal background makes for an interesting dynamic with Nairi, who’s more used to upper class society. And, as you can see from the images above, after fleshing out Rex from a narrative point of view, we gave him a special amulet. What is it for? You’ll have to play NAIRI to find out for yourself!

We hope you liked reading about Rex’s visual process! We look forward to reading your feedback in on the forums!
